The City of Wilmington has announced the closing of the “swinging bridge” over the Brandywine River. While remaining open (for the time being) for pedestrians, it is no longer open for community events. This closure has necessitated a minor course change (does not affect the 8P Relay) which we will announce soon. Essentially, we will be adding a mile on the Riverfront to the start of the marathon and half marathon to make up for the distance lost between N. Van Buren Street and the swinging bridge. All runners (including the 4P Relay) will pass the zoo, cross the Van Buren Street bridge, and proceed up S. Park Drive. The 4P turnaround will now be further up Kentmere Parkway or maybe up on Bancroft Parkway. Details (when finalized) will be posted on the Latest Update page and the Course Maps page of the website. Note: the new courses will be USATF certified and are Boston qualifiers.
The City of Wilmington has also informed us that they will enforce the 1:00 PM re-opening of the course. All marathon runners who expect to run slower than 6:15 hours should utilize our 45 minute (6:15 am) early marathon start. This early start is ONLY for runners who expect to finish in over 6:15 hours. All early start runners MUST stay behind the 6hr 15min pace vehicle for the first three miles of the course. Instructions on the early start will be sent to those who have provided us with an estimated finishing of greater than 6 hours. All runners will be allowed to finish, even after the course is re-opened at 1pm.
We very strongly suggest you plan to pick up your race packet on Saturday or send someone to do so for you. As we have done in past years, we will have “day of” early morning packet pickup starting at 5:30 am but we simply cannot process large numbers of runners on Sunday. FYI: We hand out all 4 or all 8 relay packets to the first member of your relay team who claims them. We do NOT hand out individual relay packets.
A number of relay team rosters are still not complete. Due to the large number of late changes; runner replacements; and missing information that require extra time to process, (frankly when we have other things to do) there is a $25 charge for processing relay team runner replacements; event changes; and other changes after April 20. Please check the accuracy and completeness of your information on our 2014 Participant pages. Our event program; timing and scoring files; and customize race bibs files will be sent to our third party vendors on April 21.
Due to small size of Tubman Park and the overwhelming demand to use the Delaware Marathon Running Festival event footprint as an opportunity to picnic, there will be no placement of pop-up tents in Tubman Park without the express written permission of the race organizers. Groups wishing to tailgate should contact us, and if there is room, you may be allowed to do so for a fee.
This year’s SWAG is coming in and will include a gender specific tech shirt; a runner’s hat; a pint glass; a memo pad; a cinch sack, a wonderful post-race meal, an event program, and for marathoners and half marathoners, upgraded finisher medals; customized race bibs; and the ability to print your own finisher certificates!
