Thank you for participating in Delaware’s largest running festival. Despite warm temperatures, cloud cover and mist in the early morning helped to keep the weather in check. And while it was generally not a day for PRs, the PR Bell got quite a workout. Congratulations to our returning champion, Titus Rotich of Kenya, who was our overall marathon winner in 2:24:25 and Karen Smith who ran 3:08:51 to capture our female marathon title. In the half marathon, Youssef Rochdi of Morocco (now living in NJ) set a new male half marathon event record with a 1:09:27 to collect a $500 bonus and Heather Chapman who ran 1:30:07. The overall winning relay team was Fusion who ran a 2:38:20. Overall, 282 of our infamous gender specific bobble head runner awards were given out along with over $7000 in prize money.

April 30, 2015

April 10, 2015

The Discover Bank Delaware Marathon Running Festival presented by Patterson Schwartz Real Estate is only 30 days away!

This year, 600 marathon runners will compete along with 1500 half marathoners, 800 four person relay team runners, and 600 eight person relay team runners. It’s our biggest field ever, with 3500 participants.

A couple of early announcements:

The City of Wilmington has reopened the “swinging bridge” over the Brandywine River. This means we will revert to our preferred 2013 marathon course which adds a mile in beautiful Brandywine Park and eliminates a mile on the Riverfront. The 2013 course has that U-Turn dogleg on Beech Street at Mile 1 and enters the Riverwalk by making a left at the large smokestack between buildings 2 & 3 of the Shipyard Shops. All runners (except the 8P Relay – who have already turned around on the Market Street Bridge before entering Brandywine Park) will pass the Zoo, cross the Van Buren Street bridge, and proceed up N. Park Drive to the swinging bridge before returning to S. Park Drive via the Brandywine Park jogging path. This year the 4P Relay turnaround is just beyond the Lovering Avenue bridge on the lower end of Kentmere Parkway. This year the Lap 2 marathon turnaround is just beyond the Shipyard Shops on the Riverwalk.

There is road construction on Kentmere Parkway this year which we thought would require the marathoners and half marathoners to cross over to the westbound (Pennsylvania Avenue) side of Kentmere Parkway at the Union Street intersection. We have just received permission to cross through this construction zone, so NO minor adjustment to the course will be required. This minor change will necessitate a minor adjustment to the START line. New this year: the marathon and half marathon will start together at 7AM SHARP, with the Relays starting as soon as the Start line clears. And while there will be no corrals, there will be pace flags to help you line up according to your expected pace.

The City of Wilmington will enforce the 1:00 PM re-opening of the course. All marathon runners who expect to run slower than 6:15 hours should utilize our 45 minute (6:15 am) early marathon start. This early start is ONLY for runners who expect to finish in over 6:15 hours. It is not for runners who merely wish to start early. All early start runners MUST stay behind the 6hr 15min pace vehicle for the first two miles of the course. Instructions on the early start will be sent to those who have provided us with an estimated finishing of greater than 6 hours. Note: All runners will be allowed to finish the marathon, even after the course is re-opened at 1pm. We will leave the timing equipment on.

We very strongly suggest you plan to pick up your race packet on Saturday or send someone to do so for you. This year packet pickup will open at 10AM on Saturday and close at 6PM Saturday. We will not be prepared to hand out packets on Friday. As we have done in past years, we will have “day of” early morning packet pickup starting at 5:30 am but we simply cannot process large numbers of runners on Sunday. FYI: We hand out all 4 or all 8 relay packets to the first member of your relay team who claims them. We do NOT hand out individual relay packets. Again: please arrange to have someone get your packet, if you cannot do so on Saturday!

Due to the large number of late changes; runner replacements; and missing information that require extra time to process, (frankly when we have other things we must do) there will be a $25 charge for processing relay team runner replacements; event changes; and other changes after April 19. Please check the accuracy and completeness of your information on our 2015 Participant pages now. Remember: if you want your name or nickname on your marathon/half marathon race bib, you must tell us! Please note our event program; timing and scoring files; digital photo files, and customize race bibs files will be sent to our third party vendors on April 21, so send us your corrections and updates now.

Due to small size of Tubman Park and the overwhelming demand to use the Delaware Marathon Running Festival event footprint as an opportunity to picnic, there will be no placement of pop-up tents in Tubman Park without the express written permission of the race organizers. Our tailgate area is already sold out, but if you contact us, we can help you find a spot down along the Riverwalk.

This year’s SWAG will include your gender specific tech shirt; a runner’s hat; a pint glass; a memo pad; a cinch sack, free digital photos, a wonderful post-race meal, a beer garden and champagne tent; a chocolate milk photo zone with PR Bell, an event program, and for marathoners and half marathoners, upgraded finisher medals; customized race bibs; and the ability to print your own finisher certificates!

There is still some room in the field, if you know someone who wants to run with us! While we have suspended late fees for marathon registrations, late fees do go into effect on April 11 for the half marathon and relay marathon registrations.

Three important instructional emails for race weekend will be sent beginning May 1.

Best of luck with the rest of your training.

April 5, 2015

We currently stand at 453 Marathon; 1129 Half Marathon; 133 4P Relay Teams; and 76 8P Relay Teams or 2722 runners. We still have room in the field for a few more 8P teams. If interested, please email joelschiller@races2run.com. We have also decided to waive the April 10th late registration fee for marathon only registrations. So, please tell your marathon friends that they can still register for the regular $100 price.

New this year: We’ve decided to provide all runners with FREE unlimited digital photos. We’ll also have a traditional photo booth at the event (free photo strips), a selfie stand, and a winner’s podium and back drop banner for you to take even more digital photos. Ring our PR bell and/or charge your phone: all at our Refuel with Chocolate Milk photo zone and AT&T charging station.

This year our beer’s will be Shock Top and Michelob Ultra, so we’ll be having a party at the NKS Distributors beer garden and our FranksWine champagne tent.
