Could be Delaware’s most scenic half marathon:
The marathon course consists of two half marathon loops. Both 13.1 mile loops take you from the Wilmington Riverfront through beautiful Brandywine Park, along Kentmere and Bancroft Parkways, and through the 40 Acres, Wawaset Park, and Little Italy neighborhoods of Wilmington before returning to the Riverfront via the Wilmington park system and the lower end of Rodney Square.
The City of Wilmington has reopened the “swinging bridge” over the Brandywine River. This means we will revert to our preferred 2013 marathon/half marathon course which adds a mile in beautiful Brandywine Park and eliminates a mile on the Riverfront. The 2013 course has that U-Turn dogleg on Beech Street at Mile 1 and enters the RiverWalk by making a left at the large smokestack between buildings 2 & 3 of the Shipyard Shops. For Lap 2, after returning to the Riverfront, the marathoners will turn right onto S. Shipley Street, left onto Water Street, and left onto Orange Street (behind the Riverfront Market/Capital One building) to do their out and back loop on the Riverwalk. The Marathon U Turn is just beyond the Shipyard Shops before entering the Peterson Wildlife Center.
All runners (except the 8P Relay – who will have already turned around on the Market Street Bridge before entering Brandywine Park) will pass the Zoo, cross the Van Buren Street bridge, and proceed up N. Park Drive to the swinging bridge over the Brandywine River before returning to S. Park Drive via the Brandywine Park jogging path.
The four person relay (4P Relay) course consists of four loops of 6.55 miles each starting at the Tubman Garrett Riverfront Park and running to the end of the RiverWalk and continuing on the marathon / half marathon course, before turning around on the S. Park Drive extension, just past the Lovering Avenue Bridge before the Augustine Cutoff Bridge overpass. The eight person relay (8P Relay) course consists of eight loops of 3.275 miles each starting at the Tubman Garrett Riverfront Park and running to the end of the RiverWalk and continuing on the marathon / half marathon course until the end of the N. Market Street bridge, where the 8P runners return on the sidewalk of the bridge before merging with returning marathon/half marathon/4P relay runners at the S. Park Drive / N. King Street intersection.

Park Drive, just after the Lovering Avenue bridge. If you are heading up towards the Art Museum, you’ve gone too far. Both turnarounds are marked with barrel signs and banner flags in their respective colors.
As you return to the Riverfront via King Street, you will turn right onto MLK Blvd; then left onto S. Market Street: Half Marathoners stay left and head down the FINISH chute; Marathoners stay rightand turn right onto S. Shipley/Water Street before heading onto the River Walk at Orange Street for your Lap 2. Relay runners: stay center and proceed into the Relay Transition Area (Tubman Garrett parking lot) where you will stop on the timing mats and exchange your timing belt with your teammate.
